The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has opposed the National Medical Commission's (NMC) regulation, which requires doctors to prescribe generic drugs. The IMA expressed concerns about the quality of generic drugs due to weak quality control measures in the country. It demanded that the government ensures the quality of all drugs before implementing this regulation. The IMA suggested that if the government wants doctors to prescribe only generic drugs, pharmaceutical companies should be directed to produce drugs without brand names. The association emphasized that doctors' primary responsibility is patients' health and questioned the rationale of licensing branded drugs if doctors are not allowed to prescribe them.
