Mumbai police, in collaboration with Gujarat's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), arrested Islamic preacher Mufti Salman Azhari on Sunday following allegations of hate speech. The arrest sparked protests from Azhari's supporters, who gathered outside the Ghatkopar police station demanding his immediate release.

Hundreds of demonstrators reportedly created chaos, prompting police to use lathicharge to control the situation. According to officials, a case has been registered against the gathered crowd.

Azhari, addressing his supporters from within the police station, urged them to remain calm and refrain from protesting. He reportedly denied any wrongdoing and expressed cooperation with the ongoing investigation. "I am not a criminal, and I haven't committed any crime," he said. "They are conducting their investigation, and I am fully cooperating. If it is my destiny to be arrested, I am ready for it."

Azhari's lawyer, Wahid Sheikh, claimed that around 40 plainclothes police officers arrived at his client's residence without revealing their purpose. After coordination with Azhari, they informed him about a case lodged against him under section 153B in Gujarat. Sheikh further stated that Azhari cooperated with the authorities, but no further information has been provided.

The incident highlights the sensitive nature of religious rhetoric and the potential for public unrest associated with hate speech allegations. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Azhari's claims of innocence hold weight and how the authorities will handle the ongoing protests.
