Dwarka, Gujarat, India - February 25, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-anticipated Sudarshan Setu bridge today, marking a significant milestone in infrastructure development and religious accessibility in Gujarat. The 2.32-kilometer bridge, touted as India's longest cable-stayed bridge, connects the mainland town of Okha to the holy island of Beyt Dwarka, significantly improving access to the revered Dwarkadhish temple.

Bridging the Gap, Enriching Pilgrimage:

Previously, pilgrims and tourists faced challenges reaching Beyt Dwarka, relying on ferries that were subject to weather conditions and limited operational hours. The Sudarshan Setu bridge paves the way for seamless, round-the-clock connectivity, fostering religious tourism and boosting the local economy.

Engineering Marvel with a Touch of Tradition:

The bridge boasts a central double-span cable-stayed section stretching 900 meters, flanked by a 2.45-kilometer approach road. Constructed at a cost of Rs 979 crore, the bridge is 27.20 meters wide and features spacious 2.50-meter-wide footpaths on both sides. Notably, the footpaths incorporate solar panels aimed at generating nearly one megawatt of clean electricity, showcasing the project's commitment to sustainability.

Beyond Functionality, a Visual Treat:

The Sudarshan Setu transcends its functional purpose, offering a visually captivating experience. The footpaths are adorned with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and images of Lord Krishna, reflecting the region's rich cultural heritage.

Economic and Social Upliftment:

The inauguration of the Sudarshan Setu is expected to have a significant impact on the region. The bridge is expected to:

  • Boost tourism: Improved accessibility will likely attract more pilgrims and tourists to Beyt Dwarka, generating economic opportunities for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops.
  • Enhance trade and commerce: Efficient transportation links can facilitate trade between Okha and Beyt Dwarka, benefiting local businesses and farmers.
  • Improve social connect: The bridge fosters closer social and cultural connections between the mainland and the island, strengthening the social fabric of the community.

Prime Minister Modi's inauguration of the Sudarshan Setu marks a significant step forward, not only in infrastructure development but also in enhancing religious accessibility and fostering economic growth in the region. With its unique blend of functionality, aesthetics, and cultural significance, the bridge is poised to become a landmark, leaving a lasting impact on Gujarat and beyond.
