Swedish Carl-Gustaf M4 Weapon System to be Made in India

Jhajjar, Haryana, India - In a major development for both Sweden and India, Swedish defense giant Saab has begun construction of a new manufacturing facility in Haryana, India, to produce the renowned Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon system. This marks a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and aligns with India's "Make in India" initiative, which aims to promote domestic production in the defense sector.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility was held in February 2023, and construction is well underway at MET City in Jhajjar. This will be the first facility outside of Sweden to manufacture the Carl-Gustaf M4, a shoulder-launched, multi-purpose weapon system that has been in service with the Indian Armed Forces since 1976.

"We are proud to start constructing our first facility outside Sweden for Carl-Gustaf, a product that has a long history with the Indian Armed Forces," said Görgen Johansson, Senior Vice President and Head of Saab's business area Dynamics, at a press conference in New Delhi. "This new facility will not only cater to the needs of the Indian Army but also potentially serve as an export hub for the Carl-Gustaf M4 to other users around the world."

The new facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, with production of the Carl-Gustaf M4 commencing in 2025. The factory is expected to employ approximately 100 individuals and utilize cutting-edge technologies, including advanced sighting systems and carbon fiber winding, to manufacture the weapon system.

This project signifies a win-win situation for both nations. For India, it represents a significant step towards achieving self-reliance in defense production, aligning with the "Make in India" initiative. The locally produced Carl-Gustaf M4s will equip the Indian Armed Forces with a modern and versatile weapon system, further bolstering their national security capabilities.

For Sweden, establishing a manufacturing facility in India strengthens their strategic partnership with a key regional player and opens doors for potential future collaborations in the defense sector. Additionally, the facility has the potential to serve as an export hub, expanding the reach of the Carl-Gustaf M4 to other countries in the region and beyond.

The Carl-Gustaf M4 is a versatile weapon system capable of engaging a wide range of targets, including armored vehicles, fortifications, and troops. It is known for its accuracy, reliability, and ease of use, making it a valuable asset for any military force.

The establishment of this new manufacturing facility marks a significant milestone in the ongoing cooperation between Sweden and India. It is expected to not only fulfill the needs of the Indian Armed Forces but also contribute to the growth of the Indian defense industry and strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations.
